When Kari prepared to enter the cafe's main dining area twenty minutes later, her nerves still had not settled. No matter how many deep, calming breaths she took, her racing heart sat like a lump in her throat and her damp hands shook. Pausing at the door separating the kitchen and dining room, she took one more deep breath in a desperate attempt to gather herself.
Feeling about as braced as she was going to get, Kari put on a brave face, faked a confidence she didn't feel and pushed through the swinging door. Going unnoticed by her diners, she stepped to the wide counter, appearing nonchalant as she took in the room. Sure enough, at a corner booth on the far side of the room, was an impatient-looking Eric, who sat fussing with his cell phone in his hand while ignoring everyone around him.
Aggravation and sheer panic mingled in her blood at the sight of him. Shoving these feelings aside, Kari made her way over, her heels clicking on the tiled floor with every step. She watched through cool brown eyes as her ex-husband lifted his head, catching sight of her. She first saw the recognition light in his blue eyes, only to be replaced in quick succession by irritation, then a calculating gleam.
"Kari." Only her name was spoken, with a slight tilt of his head in acknowledgement.
"What the hell are you doing here, Eric?" Kari came to a stop at the table's edge, arms folded and foot tapping, signaling her displeasure.
"And hello to you, too."
"There wasn't supposed to be any more hellos after our last goodbye, remember? Something about you never coming back to this one-horse town. It was a promise I'd hoped you'd actually keep. Should've known better." In a physical attempt to keep a hold on her temper, she folded her arms tighter.
"Yes, well. There's a little matter I'd like to discuss with you." He angled his lifted head to the seat across from him. "Why don't you sit?"
"I don't want to sit. I don't want to talk. I don't even want you here. There is nothing we could possibly have left to discuss, so why don't you go back to your girlfriend?"
"Wife." His cocky grin grated her already frayed nerves. "She's my wife now."
"Lucky girl. Make sure to give her my condolences."
"Kari." Now her name was an exasperated sigh. "Contrary to what you might think, or want, we do have something to discuss. So please, sit down before you make a scene and embarrass yourself."
Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the looks of some of her customers, their curiosity evident. On a huff of irritation and little grace, Kari flopped herself gracelessly onto the booth bench opposite him.
"There. I sat." Kari waved a hand, in a motion for him to get on with it. Taking delight in the fact it would irritate his former wife, Eric sat back with his drink, made a show of looking around the room.
"You've got a nice place here.
